Jason - Owner and head Instructor
Meet the Team
Jason is the Owner, and Head Instructor/Coach for the Club. I currently holds, a 5th Dan In kickboxing, 2nd Dan In Krav Maga, 2nd Dan Sport Karate, as well as studied 2 years of Pressure Point Fighting, 2 Years Lau Gar, 3 years Traditional Ju Jitsu and several other Martial Art Systems, since he was 13 years old. I remember watching Bruce lee and Chuck Norris movies when I was young and thought wow they are amazing. Unfortunately as a child I was severely bullied for quite few years until I was 15.And it was when I was 15 I realised that I shouldn't be bullied so in just 1 day I stopped 9 years worth of bullying. And no I didn't hurt anyone, but a block here and a throw there soo made them realise. Weirdly they actually became my friends later on in life. Hence to say that the club has a very strict anti-bullying policy. Now 52, I'm also a qualified Instructor/Teacher, Safeguarding officer, First Aid Trainer, SIA Trained, and Parkinson's UK Qualified for Martial Arts for those with Parkinson's and other life limiting illnesses, as well as teaching Martial Arts I also teach Massage, Sports therapy, Injury Therapy, Taping and Strapping alongside 14 other subjects up to level 4 alongside his wife Karen.
Mikaella - Assistant Instructor
The pathway to becoming an instructor has been a somewhat circuitous one for me. I spent a great deal of my younger years living abroad in both France and Thailand before finally retuning to the UK in 2004, and ultimately my Devonshire roots in 2019 (I hail from Knowle originally). I have worked in a number of sectors including international non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and the United Nations, the digital tech arena, and biotechnology. With a love for the unconventional, I was proudly one of the UK’s very few venom extractors working with many species of highly venomous snakes, arachnids and even centipedes! My specialisms in herpetology (reptiles and amphibians) and arachnology (spiders, scorpions) set me in good stead academically, and I subsequently obtained both a BSc (Hons) and an MSc-R in snake biometrics.
Single mum to a young son, I entered the world of martial arts quite late in life, but I quickly developed a passion for Muay Thai. I wanted to train in a high energy, full contact fight environment and Muay Thai ticked all those boxes for me. When I took my first step onto this road, it was very much a moment of catharsis for me. I have battled many demons from the past and I know what it feels like to not be in control and to be controlled. Due to these demons, I have suffered from major depressive disorder (MDD) and anxiety for many years. However, fighting has become my way of releasing all the pent-up negativity and emotions in a truly positive and empowering way. It makes me feel strong, it makes me feel confident, and it makes me feel like I can take on the world. I want other women to experience these feelings!
Currently I train K1 kickboxing, MMA and Krav Maga, and it gives me great pleasure to be able to work with Jason Ashton at Zen Combat School and offer Women’s Self-Defence classes. I have been very keen for a long time to help women take control of their circumstances, and equip them with the skills and knowledge so they can keep themselves and their children safe. Martial arts, especially the full contact variants, may seem excessively aggressive and are often male-dominated. For some of us ladies that can make us a little uncomfortable – and that’s ok! I’ve been there too. But what I really hope is that I can show you how to get your confidence back, push through boundaries you never realised you could, and ultimately have a whole lot of fun whilst you learn to protect yourself and grow a stronger, fitter you.
Come and join us at Zen Combat School - I’m looking forward to meeting you!

Dom - Assistant Instructor
As of the youngest years I loved martial arts, but my journey started over 12 years ago. Firstly, I joined Jeet Kune Do classes. After a few months of training and some breaks in between, I decided to expand my knowledge and try MMA. Along the time, this has been changed to self-defence for woman with MMA elements, where I trained around a year. Unfortunately, school exams required my full attention, therefore, I switched to something completely different – football – where I stayed another year, but my spirit was always coming back to martial arts. My real journey started properly just before my twenties: I tried Taekwon-do for several months, kickboxing, came back to MMA – where I had my first, decision, charity fight – and then I feel in love in Muay Thai, which was my focus for years. After moving to Devon, I carried on Thai boxing in a different club, alongside with Taekwon-do, for 3 months. I had another break from the clubs, but that only strengthened my love for fighting. Finally, after a few months of training traditional Kickboxing, I found Zen Combat School. I quickly realised, that this is the place I want to stay and improve. Now, I received a wonderful opportunity to share my gained over the years knowledge with other students. It’s an excellent way to expand a spirit of marital arts, improve the abilities and getting stronger, together.
