Kickboxing for Parkinsons
And other life limiting illnesses
Parkinson's disease is caused by a loss of nerve cells in substantia nigra of the brain. This leads to a reduction in a chemical called dopamine in the brain. Many different symptoms are associated with Parkinson's disease and the more common symptoms are slowness in movement and muscle stiffness. Parkinson's disease cannot be cured, but medications can help control symptoms. In some later cases, surgery may be advised.
Parkinson’s kickboxing classes typically range from 30 to 60 minutes.
Classes may include:
stretches and warmup exercises
punching speed bags and heavy bags
Working in the ring(we have a cage)
footwork and agility exercises
exercises to improve overall fitness
calisthenics and circuit training
At Zen Combat our vision is to allow people who have diagnosed with Parkinsons or with the onset of it, to help them lead a better life.
Intense exercise is thought to slow down the progression of parkinsons by stimulating neurological changes in your brain. Boxing in particular has received a lot of attention for its potential slow down the progression of PD.
More research is needed to fully understand boxing’s benefits, but some early studies look promising.
